The U.S. Center for Science in the Public Interest was the organization that tested the Coca-Cola drinks and said that 4-MEI posed a danger to those who drink Coca-Cola. The U.S. Center for Science in the Public Interest went on to say that 4-MEI is linked to cancer in animals during testing and the amount in coca-cola exceeds allowable 4-MEI levels in U.S. food supply. Specifically, the average amount (138 micrograms) of 4-MEI found in a 12-ounce can was 480 % times greater than California's allowable 29 microgram-per-day limit. Both Coke and Pepsi plan on changing their coloring process so they will not have to label their cans with a cancer warning statement.
Coke Says 4-MEI Levels in Sodas is Safe
“The caramel color in all of our products has been, is and always will be safe, according to Coke spokesperson Garza Ciarlante."
Coca-cola Consumers May Need to Worry
The the FDA told Reuters that in order to reach the 4-MEI threshold for cancer risk, you would have to drink 1000 sodas. Considering that there is ~365 days in a year and many people drink one to three sodas a day, this means that you could reach this threshold in as little as 21 year!!
Coca-Cola Coloring Change Starts in California
Although Coke says the caramel color in all Coca-cola products is safe, Coke is changing their coloring process to comply with California strict food laws and Proposition 65. Coca-Cola is also changing the manufacturing process for the caramel throughout the entire USA.
Other Health Dangers Associated with Soda
Soda has also been implicated in a variety of health issues, such as obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, and gum disease. Another unfortunate health effect of drinking soda is the weakening of bones. Some animal studies have shown that phosphorus in soda leaches calcium from bones. Similar soda studies on humans have suggested that drinking soda may lead to a tendency toward broken bones. A recent study also indicated that people who drank diet soda every day had a 61% higher risk of ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke, as compared to those who reported no soda drinking (soure: Stroke, Mar 2011; 42: e111 - e350)
Soda pop (regardless of the kind or brand) is 100% acid forming! It has a pH balance of 2. This is a very low pH number.Acidity in the body has also been associated with many health conditions, including cancer.
