There areweight-loss-supplements many types of weight loss supplements that try to improve and accelerate fat losss. The following are a few of the more popular fat burning and weight loss supplements being used today:

Thermogenic Supplements:

Thermogenics supplements are the best known type of fat burning supplements, and provide the must sales in the supplement industry. Thermogenics supplementsare supplements that work to increase metabolism, causing the body to burn more calories while boosting energy. Many thermogenics also help suppress appetite. The two main categories of thermogenic supplements on the market are stimulants and thyroid regulators.

  • Caffeine, guarana, kola nut, green tea extract: Caffeine is the most popular stimulant used for weight loss. Caffeine moderately elevates metabolic rate, encouraging thermogenesis, but not so much that you'd lose 20 lbs. sitting on the couch. It is more effective as an energy booster prior to exercise, enabling you to work out harder for longer periods of time. Caffeine can be listed under the following ingredient names: guaranine, guarana, green tea extract, kola nut, or yerba mate.

  • Ephedera (or Mahaung): Ephedra increases metabolic rate and caloric expenditure by targeting tissues such as fat stores as sources of energy. It can have an effect on heart rate and blood pressure and can cause "jitteriness".

  • Synephrine (or Citrus aurantium, bitter orange): Physiological effect is similar to the banned supplement ephedra. Synephrine increases metabolic rate and caloric expenditure by targeting tissues such as fat stores as sources of energy. It is important to note that unlike ephedra, synephrine has no effect on heart rate or blood pressure and will not cause "jitteriness". Synephrine is thought to have effects similar to other stimulants, such as increased energy levels and suppressed appetite.

  • Guggul: Made from the resin of the Commiphora mukul tree, guggul supplements contain compounds called guggulsterones which reportedly reduce blood cholesterol and fat levels. Guggul resin is also said to help normalize thyroid function, which may have a positive effect on metabolism.

  • 7-Keto (or 7-Oxo-Dehydroepiandrosterone) 7-Keto is a metabolite of dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) that will not convert into testosterone and estrogens. That means it provides all the advantages of DHEA 7 (such as a strengthened immune system, enhanced memory, and other support that's beneficial to people as they age) without the safety concerns associated with sex hormones such as DHEA. The main benefits to the bodybuilders using 7-Keto are that it has been shown to improve lean body mass by reducing cortisol (and increasing testosterone-to-cortisol ratios). Studies have also shown that 7Keto has been shown to increase the body's ability to burn calories by raising the basal metabolic rate (BMR). This means your body "burn" calories more rapidly and continually throughout the day, even while resting. A higher BMR also means less storage of fat within the body. Unlike stimulants, however, 7 keto attempts to increase metabolic rate by affecting the thyroid gland. By increasing the release of T3, the thyroid hormone that has the greatest effect on metabolic rate, 7 keto is shown to be very beneficial as a weight loss supplement.

Blood Sugar Regulators:

Blood sugar regulators help to moderate the release of insulin or stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing appetite and cravings and leading to fat loss.

  • Chromium: A mineral that helps to regulate blood sugar and improve glucose tolerance, helping to suppress appetite.

  • Arginine And Leucine:  he amino acids arginine and leucine are noncarbohydrate inducers of insulin. Adding 2-4 g of arginine and 3-4 g of leucine to your post-training meal can help promote a more powerful anabolic response. The greater the anabolic response after training, the more muscle you'll retain while dieting, the better and your resting metabolic rate will be to burn fat and get lean.

  • Gymnema: Helps control blood sugar levels by suppressing the transport of glucose from the intestines into the bloodstream. Thus, insulin is moderated which helps control hunger and cravings.
  • Glucomannan: A soluble fiber that binds with other substances in the digestive tract to slow digestion. This helps regulate blood sugar levels by reducing the absorbtion of fat and carbohydrates in the intestines. Moreover, glucomannan can absorb up to 200 times its weight in water which can lead to a feeling of fullness and suppress appetite.

EFAs (Essential Fatty Acids):

Essential fatty acids are "good" fats that include omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. These fats, found in sources such as fish, nuts, seeds, olive oil, evening primrose oil, etc. help to regulate the body's glucose/insulin response and may also lower LDL (bad) cholesterol.  They encourage fat loss. Omega-3 fats -- direct carbohydrates toward glycogen stores rather than fat stores, and one study shows that omega-3s promote the retention of nitrogen during catabolic situations (which creates an anabolic environment for growth). Omega-3 supplements are an important part of the fat-loss process.

When cutting calories, it is important to consume healthy fats such as these so the body does not go into "starvation mode." Consuming EFAs will also help keep hunger in check.

  • Fish oil/Flax oil: Fish oil and flax oil are good sources of omega 3 fatty acids.

  • Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) - Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is an omega 6 fatty acid that is a potent anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogen, and anti-catabolite, as well as a powerful immune system enhancer. CLA can interfere with a couple of enzymes that encourage the storage of bodyfat. Some of the common accolades of CLA are assistance in fat burning, building and retention of lean muscle, lowers cholesterol and triglycerides, lowers insulin resistance (which can help prevent adult-onset diabetes and make it easier to control weight), and reduces food-induced allergic reactions. Preliminary animal studies have also shown that supplementation with CLA can cause significant shifts in body composition, increase in lean mass and decreases in fat stores.

Appetite Suppressants

  • Tyrosine and Caffeine. The amino acid tyrosine, when consumed on an empty stomach, can increase levels of noradrenalin (norepinephrine) in the body to act as a mild appetite suppressant. Caffeine can enhance the effect because it compounds the noradrenalin-boosting proclivity of tyrosine and also helps free  free fatty acids from fat cells. Both free fatty acids and glycerol--the byproduct of fat breakdown--help short-circuit the appetite control center located in the brain. Consider taking 2 g of tyrosine and a cup of coffee in the morning 45 minutes before eating and repeat the process in the early afternoon to maximize the fat burning and appetite suppressant effect.

  • 5-HTP (or 5-Hydroxytryptophan): A supplement that help balance neurotransmitters responsible for regulation of mood and appetite, such as serotonin, norepinephrine and/or dopamine. Low levels of the brain chemical serotonin is responsible for depression and increase in appetite. Serotonin levels drop during a dieting phase, and this may lead to increased cravings for carbohydrates. 5-HTP is a natural supplement that is converted in the brain into a chemical called serotonin and thereby helps control the appetite. 5-HTP should not be used by individuals who are currently taking SSRI or MAOI antidepressants.  Try 50-100 milligrams (mg) daily, in split doses, shortly before your largest meals.

  • ZMA (a formulated zinc product). People who have zinc deficiency tend to have less leptin, and leptin is associated with appetite control. By bumping up zinc, you increase your leptin levels, giving you better command over your eating. ZMA is known to help improve training recovery.

  • Histidine. Histidine helps suppress appetite by influencing the hormone leptin, which helps control hunger. Consider taking 500 mg of histidine three times a day to help control appetite.

Other Supplements to Help Maximize Fat Burning

  • Calcium Pyruvate (Pyruvate) -  A form of pyruvic acid, pyruvate is synthesized in the body and consumed in food. Pyruvate assists in the production of ATP, an important biological energy source, and has been shown in studies to significantly increase fat loss when paired with exercise and a healthy diet. Pyruvate  enhances the transport of glucose and protein into muscle cells and increases the amount of ATP available to the mitochondria. Animal studies show that pyruvate may increase metabolism and reduce insulin resistance. Additional research finds indicate that pyruvate may also increase exercise endurance, further helping to promote fat loss.

  • L- Carnitine - L-Carnitine, is a trimethylated amino acid that is essential for the transformation of fatty acids into energy for muscular activity. This transformation occurs in the mitochondria, producing Coenzyme A. L-Carnitine's main function in the body is to help transport long-chain fatty acids, which are burned within the cells. This is a major source of energy. Carnitine will give an energy boost to certain enzymes needed to metabolize sugars, starches, and other carbohydrates. Athletes and casual exercisers can benefit from Carnitine supplementation because it reduces the accumulation of lactic acid, which is responsible for the "burn" felt inside the muscles during and after workouts. This may enable exercisers to "gain" without the "pain". It also clears the bloodstream of ammonia and aids in creating glycogen, the form in which the body stores glucose. As such it is a key nutrient for helping to prevent muscle atrophy. Anyone suffering from a severe degenerative disease, such as cancer or AIDS, stands to gain from Carnitine supplementation.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar - Cider vinegar promotes digestion, assimilation and elimination and it neutralizes any toxic substance taken into the body. Also thought to be very effective in detoxifying various organs in the body together with the blood stream.  It breaks down fatty, mucous and phlegm deposits within the body promoting the health of the vital organs of the body e.g. kidneys, bladder, liver etc., by preventing an excessively alkaline urine. Cider vinegar also helps oxidize the blood which consequently prevents the blood from becoming too thick and gluey, which gives rise to a strained heart and blood vessels resulting in high blood pressure.
