Top Diets Ranked
U.S. News evaluated and ranked the best diets with input from a panel of 22 health and nutrition experts. To be top-rated, a diet had to be safe, nutritious, relatively easy to follow, and effective for weight loss and against diabetes and heart disease. The method of assessment for the best diets included a rating scale measuring effectiveness, ease of compliance, nutritional completeness and health risks on a five-point scale.
Best Overall Diets
The government-designed Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) snagged the top spot for the best diet. The Mediterranean Diet, the Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes Diet (TLC Diet) and Weight Watchers all tied for second best diet. Rounding out the top ten best diets:
- Mayo Clinic Diet (third place),
- Volumetrics Diet (fourth place),
- Jenny Craig Diet (fifth place),
- Ornish Diet (sixth place),
- Vegetarian Diet (seventh place),
- Slim-Fast Diet (eighth place),
- Nutrisystem Diet (ninth place), and
- Vegan Diet (tenth place)
Best Weight Loss Diets
Weight Watchers, came in at No.1 for best weight-loss diet. The Weight Watchers weight loss program encourages portion control, eating fruit and vegetables and offers weight loss support through meetings and online.
The Raw Food Diet and Jenny Craig and tied for second place for the best weight-loss diet.
The Glycemic Index Diet and the Paleo Diet weight loss plans came in at the bottom of the ranking. Both weight loss plans were reported to lack scientific evidence and long-term weight loss maintenance.
Best Diabetes Diet
The DASH Diet ranked first for best diabetes diet, with the Ornish Diet, the Vegan Diet and the Mayo Clinic Diet in a three-way tie for second best diabetes diet.
The Zone Diet and the Paleo Diet were the big losers when it came to helping people with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
Best Heart Health Diet
The Ornish Diet ranked highest for heart health and was named the best heart healthy diet. The Ornish Diet is low-fat, high in fiber, vegetarian and integrates the mind-body experience of exercise, meditation and yoga.
In second place was the TLC Diet with the DASH Diet in third place. The TLC Diet and DASH Diet evolved from the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute and are great examples of how to apply scientific findings to improving health and wellness.
The Paleo Diet and Atkins Diet ranked at the bottom of the heart-health spectrum, with clear evidence that high-fat diets are not best for our heart, arteries or veins.
