peppermintFew holiday herbs provide the health that Peppermint can.

Peppermint, boasts a long list of health benefits, including but not limited to:

  • Cold symptom buster:  Peppermint is commonly used in cold and flu remedies. Studies have shown that peppermint kills bacteria and viruses. The menthol in peppermint effectively thins mucus and breaks up phlegm. Peppermint provides relief from coughs and congestion. You will find menthol as a common ingredient in decongestants. It is also a common ingredient in rubs used on the chest to relieve chest aches experienced during colds and the flu. Peppermint also has a soothing and numbing effect, dulling pain and aches associated with the flu. If you have a cold, inhale peppermint oil to help clear nasal passages or  just put a few drops of peppermint oil in a pot of boiled water and breathing in the steam from a safe distance (careful not to burn yourself).
  • Stomach soother: Not only is peppermint a post–meal breath freshener, peppermint can also be a stomach soother when a meal takes its toll. A preparation of peppermint and caraway oils may relieve indigestion symptoms. And a study in the Journal of Gastroenterology suggests peppermint oil capsules can decrease pain and cramping from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS); peppermint tea has been found to provide similar effects on digestive problems, including heartburn and indigestion.
  • Headache breaker. Try rubbing peppermint oil on your forehead and temples to help ease tension headaches brought on by the holiday rush.
  • Skin remedy. Peppermint herb is highly effective in topical creams used to treat a variety of skin conditions, including but not limited to rashes, poison oak, poison iv and hivesy. When peppermint is applied to the skin, these ointments have a soothing and healing effect.
