Make no mistake, refined sugar is one of the most dangerous things we consume on a regular basis. One teaspoon of sugar will suppress your immune system for up to 6 hours. The average American adult consumes around 170-190 pounds of sugar per year. The average child consumes as much as 250 pounds of sugar per year. Think about that for a moment. If a teaspoon of sugar can suppress your immune system for 6 hours what does 170 pounds do to us? Is it any wonder why so many people have headaches, sleeping problems, chronic fatigue, and are always getting sick?
Not only does sugar lower our immune system, it causes us to overeat. Refer to my article called "Six turkey sandwiches part 1 and 2" to learn how sugar affects the appestat in the back of your brain and literally "tricks" us into overeating.
Sugar is found in just about every type of processed or "packaged" food. It is also found in most fast food meals. My point is, it is difficult to avoid sugar completely, unless you switch to eating only organic whole foods. A rule that we use with our clients is to limit your sugar intake to 20% of the total carbohydrate that a food has. For example, if a food item has 50 grams of carbohydrates you would multiply that by 20%. 50 times 20% is 10. So what we are saying is that the food with 50 grams of carbohydrates cannot exceed 10 grams of sugar.
BE WARNED
Sugar is more addicting than CRACK. We just don't think about it like that because it is legal and it is everywhere we look. As a result of the "addiction" concept you will experience withdrawal symptoms when you begin to follow this protocol for sugar consumption. These symptoms may include grumpiness, irritability, sleeplessness, fatigue, and headaches. The good news is that the symptoms will usually only last 3-6 days and after that you will begin to feel amazing.
