Essential nutrients are nutrients that cannot be synthesized by the organism
in sufficient quantities and must be obtained from an external source.
Essential nutrients needed in relatively large quantities are called macronutrients
(e.g., protein carbohydrates, fats) and those needed in relatively small
quantities (generally less than 100 micrograms/day) are called micronutrients.
Micronutrients include trace minerals like cobalt, copper, chromium, iodine,
iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium and zinc.
