Sales of  energy shots have soared to $544 million in 2008, double those of the previous year, according to the Information Resources Inc., a Chicago-based market research firm. Sales are expected to top over $700 million this year, making energy shots are the fastest-growing segment of the $5 billion energy drink market.

With so many energy shots on the market, but how do you know which energy shot is best?

Stacker 2 Xtra Energy Shot is the first in a series of reviews I will be doing on many of the high energy shot products on the market. I am going to start with Stacker 2’s 2oz Xtra Energy Shot (grape flavor) which I found to be the best of Stacker 2’s high energy shot products.

Energy Shot Main Players

While Living Essentials pioneered energy shots in 2004 with 5-Hour Energy, and still holds more than 75% of the market, there are many new competitors, including some very well known names in the beverage, as well as vitamin and supplement out there. Industry heavyweights such as Red Bull, Monster Energy, and Coca-Cola have since introduced their own energy shots, while so has the makers of diet/energy Supplement Stacker and many others.

Energy Shot Common Ingredients

Energy Shot ingredients vary, but most contain caffeine, B vitamins and taurine (an amino acid found in food from animal sources) as well as different flavorings and artificial sweeteners.

A lot of energy shots contain multiple, multiple amounts of ingredients such as taurine and tyrosine and phenylalanine, caffeine and guarana. Currently there’s not enough research on how many of these "energy boosting" and other "natural" ingredients are going to react together and affect health down the road.

Nutritionists are also concerned about other ingredients in the shots and how they might interact. They would like to see more studies on the safety and effectiveness of the blends. Because they are marketed as dietary supplements, energy shots do not require FDA approval before hitting the market.

Energy Shot Allure

Energy shots are not only portable, but lower in calories than most energy drinks. Several are also sugar free, and artificially sweetened, with calories as low as 4 calories per shot. A regular 8-ounce Red Bull energy drink, by comparison, has 100 calories, while a sugar-free Red Bull has 10 calories.

Stacker 2 Xtra Energy Shot Review

Packaging: 2oz bottle is colored as the same as the flavor (purple for grape, red for berry, orange for orange) with the Xtra logo in big letters and energy shot in smaller red letters. Packaging is very nicely done.

Taste: Grape taste is great, similar to Gatorade’s grape drink.

Energy Effects: I started feeling my energy increase in about twenty minutes after taking Xtra Energy Shot and without the jitteriness one might expect after taking high caffeinated products.

Sustained Effects: I had more energy during my entire workout plus a couple of hours afterwards without the crash one sometimes gets.

After Effects (crash): Xtra Energy Shot did not have any crashing effects. I return to my normal energy level around four hours later.

Overall Assessment: Stacker 2’s Xtra Energy Shot is the best of their energy shots I have tried. Xtra Energy Shot had lasting ability and without the crash after the effects of Xtra wore off. Xtra Energy Shot taste was great and easy to take.

Stacker 2’s Energy Shot Rating (Five Stars Being Best)

Energy Rating: I will give Xtra Energy Shot 5 out of 5 stars, for having a more gradual and sustained energy level without receiving any jitteriness.

Taste Rating: I will give Xtra Energy Shot 4 out of 5 stars for its grape flavor without having a lasting after taste.

Value Rating: I will give Xtra Energy Shot 4 out of 5 stars for getting what you pay for. The cost is about the same as most energy shots but with better results.

Would I Recommend? I would recommend Stacker 2’s Xtra Energy Shot to anyone who needed an extra boost to get through their exercise programs, staying alert while driving or just getting through their daily grind. And especially to those who would normally get the jittery effects and crash after using other energy boosters.

Where to Get Stacker 2’s Xtra Energy Shot

Xtra Energy Shot is available most everywhere, drug stores, Target and Wal-Mart stores, and many online stores including eBay and

Retail Cost: Xtra Energy Shot varies in price between $1.27 and $1.58 per bottle. Also Xtra Energy Shot is sold in 6, 12 and 24 packs. It pays to shop around, I have seen Xtra as low as $1.15 on sale.

Final Word on Stacker 2’s Xtra Energy Shot

Overall, I feel that Stacker 2’s Xtra Energy Shot is a well-made energy shot product and one of the best Stacker 2 has on the market. If you ever get the chance to try it, it’s worth every penny for a perfect energy boost without any side effects, such as jitteriness or crashing. If you are into endurance sports, Xtra Energy Shot will work especially well for you. Stacker 2 Xtra Energy Shot also comes in a 3oz size if you fill you still need something with an extra kick.
